Little Canada is a small Ramsey County city built around the interchange of I-35E and I-694, with Highway 36 skirting its southern edge and Rice Street running through the middle. That position on two freeways makes it one of the quickest suburbs for us to reach from Minneapolis — I-35E carries a technician nearly to the city center — and it also shapes what the city is: a strip of apartment complexes along Rice Street, warehouses and light industry tucked against the freeways, and quiet lakeside neighborhoods around Gervais Lake, Lake Owasso, and Savage Lake once you get off the main roads.

Apartments Along Rice Street

Rice Street north of Highway 36 is lined with apartment complexes and townhome developments, and multifamily housing makes up a bigger share of Little Canada than of most neighboring cities. That means a lot of our calls here come from renters and property managers rather than homeowners: a unit rekey between tenants, a mailbox lock that lost its key, a lockout at midnight after the office has closed. We ask for identification on rental lockouts and follow whatever authorization the lease sets out, because a rekey done for the wrong person is the one mistake a locksmith cannot undo.

Warehouses and Shops off County Road D

The land between I-35E and the county line along County Road D and Centerville Road is a working district of warehouses, contractors’ yards, and small manufacturers — businesses that run on padlocks, dock doors, and a keyring that has grown by one key for every door added over twenty years. Master-keying that keyring down to a few keys is the single most useful thing we do for these owners. The other frequent requests are high-security padlocks on gates, panic hardware on exit doors that inspectors flag, and a rekey after a foreman leaves with a full set.

Gervais Lake, Lake Owasso, and the Older Neighborhoods

Away from the freeways, Little Canada’s houses sit on the wooded streets between the lakes — 1960s and 70s split-levels and ramblers on Gervais Lake and the Little Canada side of Lake Owasso, plus a scattering of older homes near the original French-Canadian settlement the city is named for. Home rekeys after a sale and deadbolt upgrades on doors that came with only a knob lock are the everyday jobs here, and the lake lots add the seasonal ones: a shed padlock rusted through by spring, a dock-box lock that seized over the winter.

Canadian Days and the Interchange Lots

Canadian Days in early August closes the streets near the city hall and packs the park with the whole city, and the overflow parking on the side streets produces its share of locked cars with keys on the dashboard. The rest of the year the park-and-ride and commuter lots near the 35E and 694 ramps are the cold-weather source: a car that sat through a subzero workday and came back with a frozen lock or a fob the cold drained.

Apartment, warehouse, or a house on the lake, reach a dispatcher at any hour and get a real arrival estimate for Little Canada, not a guess.

Little Canada Locksmith FAQs

Where exactly is Little Canada, and how long does it take you to get there?

It's the small city wrapped around the interchange where I-35E crosses I-694, just north of Roseville and St. Paul. Because it sits on that junction, it is one of the easier Ramsey County addresses for us to reach — I-35E runs straight from the Minneapolis side of the metro to the middle of town. Dispatch will still quote an arrival window from the nearest truck's position, since that is what determines the real number.

Our warehouse off County Road D has a dozen doors on different keys. Can that be consolidated?

Yes — this is exactly what a master-key system is for. We survey the doors, decide which staff need access to which areas, and pin the cylinders so one key opens everything for the owner while a shipping lead's key opens only the dock and the break room. It can usually be done in one visit for a building that size, and the old keys stop working the same day.

I'm in an apartment on Rice Street and my roommate moved out with a key. Who should call — me or the landlord?

Check your lease first; in most rentals the landlord controls the locks and will authorize a rekey, often at the tenant's cost. If the landlord tells you to arrange it, we can rekey the unit and hand you the new keys with a copy for the office. We do ask for proof you live there, which protects tenants as much as it protects owners.
